2016 Summer STEM Institute

2016 Summer STEM Institute - Careers and Relevance

This year’s Summer STEM Institute will focus on today’s fastest growing STEM careers.   Teachers and Counselors will tour local companies that employ workers in the fastest growing STEM careers in such areas as: photonics, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, environment, energy, food and agriculture, software development, and other emerging industries.  The tours and discussions will showcase not only a variety of careers, but help educators better understand the skills and training needed for students to be successful in these careers.  In addition, the Summer STEM Institute will help teachers relate their lessons to real world applications and gain an understanding of how engineering design principles are applied in every day work.

Networking lunches with local engineers, scientists, and business people also will provide educators with the opportunity to gain further insight into ensuring our students are career and college ready.  Sessions are also scheduled for teachers and counselors to discuss their teaching, lessons, and what they are learning with each other.  Supported by local STEM coaches and mentors, these sessions will include ideas and outlines for developing project and problem based lessons that teachers can take back to their classrooms.

The institute is open to all Teachers, Administrators, and Counselors in both public and private schools. However, this summer’s STEM Institute will emphasize content and learning standards for Grades 6 to Grade 12.  The institute will be offered for five days from August 1st to August 5th from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Monroe 1 BOCES.    Course tuition is $225 and qualifies for BOCES aid.
